Dragonball Z (a.k.a. “DBZ”) originally was a “manga” (i.e., Japanese comic book)that, because of its booming popularity, became an animated cartoon show in the United States and elsewhere. The comic books were created entirely by Akira Toriyama, who also led the production of the cartoon series as well. The storyline of the series is based largely on the novel “Journey to the West” (i.e., a Chinese folktale published in the 1500′s; it is still a very popular part of contemporary Chinese culture), and the central protagonist of the story is Goku, a brave and strong “saiyan” (i.e., a superhero). Throughout the Dragonball series, Goku has to defeat enemies, befriend many brave warriors, rescue groups of people, and summon a dragon in order to grant unique wishes by collecting the “dragonballs”. The obsession with the Dragonball series by many millions of individuals worldwide has sparked an interest for toys, movies, collectible cards, electronics, etc. Thus, the Dragonball sagas are simultaneously an important part of many individuals’ lives, and they are also a huge success for the creator himself.

The hero of the series, Goku, is the son of a saiyan named “Bardoc”; Goku miraculously winds up on earth while many of the saiyans (including his own father) are destroyed by an enemy named “Frieza”. During his childhood, Goku befriends many individuals, including Master Roshi (i.e., a fighting master who trains him in fighting), Bulma (i.e., a green-haired scientific lady), Chi Chi (i.e., she becomes Goku’s wife), and Krillin (i.e., his best friend). Goku is revealed to be a saiyan, an individual who has the power to transcend normal strength enormously. When Goku transforms into his saiyan mode, the viewer can tell he is in the unique form by his unique appearance: glowing golden aura and blond hair color. Interestingly, there are four levels to a saiyan: super saiyan one, two, three, and four (i.e., the most powerful form, and the one Goku strives to reach towards the end of the Dragonball series). Goku defeats many of the universe’s most powerful villains on his conquests, including Vegeta, Freiza and his Ginyu Squad, Cell and the Androids, Cooler, King Cold, Majin Buu, Super 17, etc. Thus, Goku is central to the plot line of DBZ, and each time the viewer thinks Goku is finished, he reappears and defeats his foes, displaying a heroic and valiant nature.

Goku also appears in a large array of video games, which an interested individual may purchase for many gaming systems, such as: Dragon Daihikyō, Daimaō Fukkatsu, Gekitō Tenkaichi Budokai, Super Butōden 3, Ultimate Battle 22, Legends, Hyper Dimension, Final Bout,Budokai, Budokai 2, Budokai 3, Sagas, Burst Limit, Infinite World,Raging Blast,Revenge of King Piccolo, et al. Many DBZ fanatics worldwide, then, can garnish video games to play featuring the star of the series: Goku.
