There are dozens of Dragon Ball Z games out there, either flash based or proper console/handheld releases by legitimate companies; this means that it is quite difficult to find something that really draws in a Dragon Ball Z fan and keeps them held long enough for them to experience the full product. That’s where Dragon Ball 3 succeeds; as a Dragon Ball Z fan, I was quite excited about the game. It’s truly too bad my excitement was for nothing.

While Dragon Ball 3 was able to keep me playing to the end, the end itself is so abrupt and unexpected that I was literally just flying around and shooting ki blasts until something happened. I’ll save you some time, though; awsd are the movement keys, a being back, w being up, s being forward and d being down while you fly around on your Flying Nimbus cloud, and after about a minute of dodging bullets, I found the attack key: l, which is used to make Goku swing his Power Pole, while the k key uses sensu beans when you get them after they float towards you randomly as well.

The gameplay reminds me of the old Sega Master System classic, Cloud Master, which itself seems to be based off of Journey to the West, the story of Sun WuKong, the Monkey King, the inspiration for Dragon Ball as well. This may be coincidence, or it may not, but the concept of flying around on a cloud on an x and y axis, shooting energy blasts at random foes is definitely the focus of both Cloud Master and Dragon Ball 3. This was obviously enough to keep me playing until the end, not something I’m proud of, but honestly quite a feat, as I suffer from an extremely low attention span.

The aforementioned abrupt end had no rhyme or reason to it; I just shot Red Ribbon helicopters with my Kamehameha (press and hold “l” to charge it up) for a couple of minutes until the screen changed to a boss. If you’re looking to play this game for more than 10 minutes, you’re going to be disappointed, because there is one stage, and it is completely random.
